Stories in Stone

An eclectic mix of illustrations of interesting buildings.

Beachy Head Lighthouse, East Sussex

Completed in 1902, Beachy Head Lighthouse was built on a wave-battered rock platform at the foot of the famous white cliffs of East Sussex, replacing the earlier Belle Tout Lighthouse on the clifftop. Designed by Sir Thomas Matthews, its distinctive red and white tower has guided ships safely through one of the busiest stretches of the English Channel for more than a century. Today, it remains an enduring symbol of Britain's maritime heritage and the skill and determination of the engineers who built it.
