My Quiet Fascination with Doorways
We all pass through dozens of doorways every day without giving them a second thought, but I have always been curious about what lies just out of sight. So, I decided to take a look at why this might be and I found I am not alone in finding them so captivating.
A doorway creates anticipation because it conceals as much as it reveals. We can see that there is something beyond, but not necessarily what it is. They are such a common feature of our lives that they often go unnoticed, becoming little more than functional openings between rooms, buildings, and spaces. Yet despite their ordinary nature, doorways are often beautiful and elaborate pieces of architecture which makes them excellent subjects for pen and ink illustrations.
Ancient civilizations often placed great importance on doorways, decorating them with carvings, statues, and intricate designs. Grand cathedral doors were intended to inspire wonder, while fortified gates demonstrated strength and protection.
Doorways have always played a central role in storytelling. They are frequently used as gateways to adventure, mystery, and transformation. Some of the most memorable tales begin when a character discovers a hidden door or steps through an unexpected entrance.
A weathered wooden door, a brightly painted entrance, or an old stone archway can suggest entire stories without a single word being spoken. A doorway can hint at history, culture, mystery, or personal experience. It invites viewers to imagine the lives that have passed through it and the events it has silently witnessed over the years.
Beyond their symbolic and artistic appeal, doorways are woven into many of life's most important moments. We cross the threshold of a first home, walk through the doors of a new workplace, enter schools, hospitals, places of worship, and countless other spaces that shape our experiences. Some doorways lead us toward exciting opportunities, while others accompany moments of challenge or change. In this way, they become quiet markers of our personal journeys.
Perhaps that is why doorways continue to fascinate me. They are ordinary objects that carry extraordinary meaning. They remind me that every ending can become a beginning, and that beyond every threshold lies the potential for something new.
In a world where much is known and mapped, a doorway still offers a simple but powerful invitation: step through and discover what awaits on the other side.
