Titchfield Abbey began life in the 13th century as a monastery founded for the Premonstratensian canons, a religious order devoted to prayer, study and community life. Nestled in the Hampshire countryside, the abbey flourished for centuries before the upheaval of Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s brought monastic life to an abrupt end. Rather than being abandoned entirely, the buildings were transformed into a grand Tudor mansion by Thomas Wriothesley, one of Henry VIII’s most powerful advisers.
